Council of Europe urges Russia to pay compensation to Georgia

The Minister Committee of the Council of Europe has reevaluated execution process of illegally deported Georgian citizens' case, reconsidered arguments by the Georgian Government and urged Russia to pay a €10 million compensation to Georgia.

The Committee stressed that paying the amount imposed on Russia by the Strasbourg Court is a must and voiced concerns over the obligated country's failure to pay the compensation so far.

Additionally, The Minister Committee has expressed concerns about the attempts by the Russian Delegation to question consistency of the procedures for compliance with decisions by the European Court, with this in the first place implying Russia's obligation to pay compensation.

Despite opposition by the Russian Federation, The Committee met Georgia's requirement and scheduled the next debate on illegally deported Georgian's case in March 2020.

The Committee delivered its first decision on illegally deported Georgians' case on Sept 23-25 and appealed to Russia to pay a €10 million compensation to Georgia.
