The executive director of the Center for Economic Reforms and Communications Analysis of Azerbaijan, Vusal Gasimli, said that work on creating a digital Azerbaijani manat has already begun.
He made the announcement at the 5th International Banking Forum in Baku, entitled "Cashless Economy: Reliable, Safe and Sustainable."
"The latest revolutionary change in money has been the release of blockchain-based cryptocurrencies. Work on creating a digital manat has already begun. Negotiations are underway in the government on this issue," he said.
Digital GEL will be put into consumption in pilot mode from 2022.
