Ushguli may be removed from World Heritage List

As ICOMOS Georgia informs, the village of Ushguli may be removed from the World Heritage List due to illegal construction works in its nearby territory, Chazha.

According to ICOMOS Georgia, the ongoing construction works are causing the world heritage monument to lose its authenticity.

The Cultural Heritage Agency officials state that they will eradicate shortfalls detected during rehabilitation works, but irreversible results may be brought by illegal construction works.

“Due to the houses being built by the locals, the area may be put under threat,” Director of the Agency Nikoloz Antidze declared.

According to him, UNESCO experts, who will assess the existing situation on the spot, are expected to visit the area next spring.
