Why did the Kopitnari Railway project fail?

''We will present a draft of a decree regarding the Kopitnari Railway to the government shortly,'' Georgian Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Natia Turnava said yesterday.

According to Turnava, the optimal project will be beneficial to the country.

''We will build it in parallel to the new terminal that will be over in 2020. Everything will start operation in time,'' Turnava said.

As the Georgian government reported in 2017, the new railway would enable trains to stop in the vicinity of Kutaisi International Airport.

The railroad was to be completed in spring 2018, but PM Giorgi Kvirikashvili postponed the date for a year.

In 2019, Head of the Union of Airports of Georgia Giorgi Chogovadze declared that the railway would open in a year.

On January 28, 2020, the government reported that the Kopitnari railway project would end shortly, but the date of its implementation remains vague.
