Inventor of cassette tape and CD, Lou Ottens, dies

Dutch engineer Lou Ottens, who invented the cassette tape and CD, has died in the Netherlands at the age of 94.

The engineer started working for Philips in 1952. Eight years later, he headed the company's product development department, and within a year, he and his team created the first portable tape recorder.

In 1962, Ottens invented the compact cassette. According to the inventor, the cassette should have been small enough to fit in a jacket pocket. Later, Ottens also invented the CD.

The inventor retired in 1986. It is a well-known fact that he always emphasized that both inventions were the result of collective effort.
