Anti-COVID-19 nasal spray developed in Australia

Clinical trials of COVID-19 nasal spray are underway in Victoria, Australia. According to Report.ge, New Atlas writes about it.

As scientists say, heparin nasal spray is effective against COVID-19 infection. The idea of its use is based on the hypothesis that in the first stage of SARS-CoV-2 infection, virus particles enter the nose by interaction with a heparan sulfate molecule. The virus S-protein binds to heparan sulfate, which increases its ability to interact with ACE2 receptors.

Heparin is a widely used anticoagulant to treat heart attacks and blood clots.

The study aimed to determine how effectively nasal spray protects against the transmission of COVID-19. However, researchers want to find out if heparin reduces the severity of symptoms.

The study authors also note that this prophylactic nasal spray should be effective against all variants of the virus.
