NCDC Head releases information on alleged detection of UK COVID strain in Georgia

NCDC Head Amiran Gamkrelidze says that the UK coronavirus strain has not yet been found in Georgia; however, research is underway to learn whether the genome has accumulated the mutation.

In Gamkrelidze's words, mutation of respiratory viruses is nothing new, and if the new strain is detected, the public will be informed immediately.

"We have learned from British and other sources that this virus strain may be more easily transmittable; however, it is not more virulent and aggressive. We also know that the developed or yet to be developed vaccines will prove effective against this strain. This is not a new discovery, and there were talks about it as early as in September," Gamkrelidze declared.
