Orthodox Christendom marks St George's Day today

Today Orthodox Church celebrates Saint George’s Day (Giorgoba in Georgian), the red-letter day in the Orthodox country’s religious calendar.

Twice a year, on May 6 and November 23 (according to the Julian calendar), Orthodox Christians worldwide mark Saint George’s Day.

The legend has it that Emperor Diocletian ordered to torture Saint George on the wheel following his failed attempt to bribe George with the promise of money, land, and slaves to entice him into turning against his faith. The 30-year-old saint was decapitated on 23 April 303.

Saint George is considered Georgia's patron saint.
