Georgian Olympic team won the first gold medal at the Olympic Games in Tokyo. Lasha Bekauri, a young man in the 90-kilogram weight category, defeated German Eduard Trippel in the final and won the first gold medal at the first Olympics in his career.
In the first round, Bekauri defeated Polish Piotr Kuczera. Afterward, he defeated the representative of Israel Li Kochman, and in the quarterfinals, the representative of Uzbekistan, Davlat Bobonov, got eliminated. In the semifinals, he defeated Russian Mikhail Igolnikov.
