35 years since the Chernobyl tragedy

Thirty-five years have passed since the accident at the fourth power unit of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.

Memorial events are planned in Ukraine today. President Volodymyr Zelensky will take part in them together with the representatives of the local authorities.

The accident at the fourth power unit of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant occurred on April 26, 1986, at 01:23. A powerful explosion destroyed part of the reactor and resulted in a fire. The radiation cloud spread across Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, Sweden, Austria, Norway, Germany, Finland, Greece, Romania, Slovenia, Lithuania, and Latvia. According to the International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale (INES), this disaster has been assigned the highest, 7th level of danger.
