5.5-magnitude quake strikes off Japan

An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.5 on Saturday struck off Iwate Prefecture in northern Japan, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).

The temblor occurred at around 04:19 p.m. local time, with its epicenter at a latitude of 40.1 degrees north and a longitude of 142.2 degrees east, and at a depth of 50 km, Xinhua reports.

The quake logged 5 Lower in some parts of Iwate Prefecture on the Japanese seismic intensity scale, which peaks at 7.

So far, no tsunami warning has been issued.
