Azerbaijan declares martial law

Following the decree of President Ilham Aliyev, the government of Azerbaijan has declared martial law in several towns and regions nationwide, local media say.

As Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan, Head of the Department for Foreign Policy Affairs of Azerbaijan's Presidential Administration Hikmat Hajiyev says, President Aliyev approved the decree adopted by the Milli Majlis.

The decree has already been enforced.

The martial law has been declared in Baku, Ganja, Yevlakh, and Goygol.

The curfew will be in force in other areas.

Military operations have been underway at the Azerbaijan-Armenia border since the early morning. Azerbaijani media say that Armenia carried out a large-scale attack this morning and killed peaceful citizens.

Azerbaijani Defense Ministry reports that Azerbaijani troops opened fire in response.
