European Parliament suing the European Commission for inaction

According to Reuters, the European Parliament is suing the European Commission. The reason is the non-use of a legal mechanism by the European Commission, which allows its member states to suspend funding due to violations of the rule of law.

The European Commission is investigating Poland and Hungary for alleged breaches of EU law but has refused to impose financial sanctions because the EU Supreme Court has postponed confirming its validity until next year.

According to the European Parliament, the European Commission is authorized to use the financial mechanism as soon as it enters into force and not wait for a court decision.

In case of financial sanctions, Poland and Hungary will lose tens of billions of euros.
