FDA authorizes first weight loss drug

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has authorized a weight loss drug, Science Alert writes.

Wegovy, a new weight management drug, is manufactured by the Danish pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk.

A study earlier this year involving nearly 2 000 overweight people from 16 countries found that the drug contributed 15% to weight loss.

Some participants in the study lost even more weight. More than 30 percent of the group lost more than 20 percent of their weight.

"No other drug can achieve this level of effectiveness," said researcher Rachel Batterham of the University of London.

In the U.S., three-quarters of people over the age of 20 have a weight problem. Experts hope the new medication will help many people lose weight.
