Heavy sandstorm covers the Canary Islands

All flights in and out of the Canary Island of Gran Canaria were suspended on February 22 after a sandstorm from the Sahara hit the Canaries.

The National Weather Forecast Agency of Spain informs that 120km/h wind to move on the territory.

The government of the Canary calls for the population, and particularly those who have respiratory problems, to stay at home. All doors and windows of the buildings throughout the island are closed. Several events are postponed, including the carnival.

The phenomenon is known as Tenerife “Calima.” The sand taken by the wind over the Sahara Desert moves and covers the island.
