Italy stiffens border controls

Italy has stiffened border controls to prevent the spread of a new coronavirus variant, DW reports.

The strict quarantine applies to passengers arriving in Italy from Austria.

As Italian Health Minister Roberto Speranza says, the new regulations are enforced today.

Those who have been in Austria for more than 12 hours, including transit passengers, should present a negative coronavirus test result to Italian border guards.

Passengers arriving in Italy should undergo a two-week quarantine.
