Spain sees record number of new COVID cases

Spain reported on Friday 25,595 new cases of the coronavirus since the previous update to bring its total virus case tally to 1,185,678 and record a new daily high in infections, health authorities in the country confirmed. Meanwhile, 9,723 cases were detected over the past 24 hours.

The total number of deaths increased by 239 to 35,878 since the previous day's update.

The Parliament of Spain voted on Thursday in favor of extending a nationwide state of emergency, introduced amid new spikes in infections from COVID-19, by another six months until May 9, 2021.
