Narikala Fortress has been named among the most endangered cultural heritage sites in Europe.

The list also includes Achensee Steam Cog Railway, Tyrol, Austria, Modern Theatre, Sofia, Bulgaria, Cemetery Complex of Mirogoj, Zagreb, Croatia, Church of Saint-Denis, Hauts-de-France, France, Green Space System, Cologne, Germany, Five Southern Aegean Islands, Greece, The Giusti Garden, Verona, Italy, The Ca' Zenobio Palace, Venice, Italy, Dečani Monastery, Kosovo, Central Post Office in Skopje, North Macedonia, San Juan de Socueva Chapel and Hermitage, Cantabria, Spain.

Each monument was selected according to its distinctive cultural value as well as the significant threat. In addition, the selection considered the level of involvement of the local population in the preservation of these monuments, the responsibility of the public or private sector, the potential of the monument in terms of promoting social and economic development.

"Narikala Fortress is one of the most famous and ancient cultural heritage sites in Georgia. A strong earthquake in 1827 almost destroyed the inner part of Narikala Fortress and severely damaged its outer walls. The fortress is in danger of destruction," the Tbilisi City Hall explained.
