Agar Sugar starts working again

"Agar Sugar" resumed operation on April 1. As the factory management told report.ge, the factory managed to continue work with the state's support. The factory plans to process 70,000 tons of raw sugar by the end of the year. As Alkhan Alizade, the General Director of Agar Sugar, told report.ge, the negotiations with the government completed successfully, and there are all conditions for the factory to continue operating in an environment acceptable to it. As Alizade points out, the conditions are the same as last year regarding gas tariffs and logistics benefits. In particular, as Alizade says, the company received a discount on natural gas and railway-logistics services, the benefit of which will remain in force this year. The factory employs about 500 people.

For the last few years, the agar plant has been operating periodically and then closing down again. It was last launched in June last year after a one-year hiatus, but only for a few months. "Agar Sugar" stopped its activities on December 31 last year due to the exhaustion of state support measures, and the management explained this by a pandemic crisis.

"It was a planned halt caused by the crisis. Hopefully, we will not face this threat this year," Alkhan Alizadeh, General Director of Agar Sugar, told report.ge.

This time the factory was able to start operating again with the help of the state after a three-month hiatus.

The plant first stopped operations on November 1, 2017, and moved into conservation mode due to changes in raw and white sugar prices on the international market. After the protests of the unemployed factory workers demanding the start of production due to an agreement reached with the state with the involvement of the business ombudsman's office and trade unions, the factory started operating in June of 2018, until December 31.

The government announced the promotion of local sugar production in April 2021.

To meet the market demand for sugar, the government decided to resume production in Agar.

According to the Minister of Economy, the resumption of sugar production will meet the local demand for sugar by 50%.

Azerbaijani capital is invested in "Agar Sugar." Azersun Holding of Azerbaijan owns it.
