Alleged risks of entry of Chinese companies in Georgia

Specific Georgian economic experts say that the prospect of attracting Chinese enterprises in the aftermath of the COVID-19 epidemic can be dangerous for the Georgian business.

As financer Vakhtang Khomizurashvili states, the Chinese product will cause distrust in the EU market and may cause the closure of the EU market for the Georgian product.

''The statement saying that Georgia will invite the Chinese enterprises in Georgia is ambitious,'' he says, adding the decision is unacceptable.

''The US and Europe are in ''hush war'' with China,'' he says.

In Khomizurashvili's words, Chinese companies produce goods in Georgia, but the products will be exported under the label ''Made in Georgia.''

''It means that the disguised goods will be exported to Europe,'' he says, adding Georgia may be declared as 'non grata' and qualified as a fraud.

''It may even receive sanctions,'' Khomizurashvili adds.

He says that the Chinese workforce will also arrive in Georgia with the enterprises that may cause many problems.

''No qualified staff will meet the Chinese business in Georgia. Thus, China will have to send the workforce here, and the EU may close its market for us, and the business may see great losses,'' Vakhtang Khomizurashvili says, assessing the initiative as a 'dangerous game.'

One of the leaders of the Lelo for Georgia political party Gigla Mikautadze responded to Economic Minister Natia Turnava's statement [on attracting Chinese companies] and said that Georgia had no business environment to attract international companies.
