The natural gas futures market, which will open in 2021 under the Energy Exchange Istanbul, will significantly contribute to trading activities.

In December, Turkey imported 1,102 million cubic meters of natural gas from Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan's gas imports to Turkey increased by 15.6% annually and reached 6,260 million cubic meters. 4.861 million cubic meters are transported through pipelines, which is 32.9% more than the previous year.

Azerbaijan ranks second in total Turkish gas imports.

The leading exporter of gas to Turkey is Russia, which exported 2.948 million cubic meters of gas to Turkey (+ 56.4%). Iran holds third place with 818 million cubic meters of exported gas.

Natural gas extracted from the Shah Deniz field in Azerbaijan is transported to Turkey. Natural gas is supplied to the Turkish market via the South Caucasus Pipeline (Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum) and TANAP. The first gas through the Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum pipeline entered the Turkish market in 2007. Commercial gas supply to Turkey through TANAP started on June 30, 2018.

In 2020, Turkey exported 11.1 billion cubic meters of gas from Azerbaijan, 21% more than the previous year. Of this volume, TANAP pumped 4.7 billion cubic meters of gas, which is 1.9 billion cubic meters, or 68.8% more than in 2019.
