According to the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, a modern international airport, will be built in Lachin or Kalbajar districts. These areas are mountainous, and it is difficult to find a suitable place for the airport's construction; however, according to Aliyev, the relevant work is already underway.
"It is difficult to find a suitable place, but research is underway, and I hope that information will be provided to me shortly. A new international airport will be built in Lachin or Kalbajar," Ilham Aliyev said.
A second airport will be built in the city of Fizuli.
"I have instructed for the construction to begin soon," Aliyev said, adding that the construction of international airports in Karabakh is very important for the development of this region, as it will allow receiving any type of aircraft.
"It will also create favorable conditions for the future development of both domestic and international tourism. Our airline AZAL should seriously work on the organization of international flights to ensure air transportation to our neighboring countries as soon as the airport in Fizuli opens," President Aliyev stated.
The districts of Fizuli, Lachin, and Kalbajar came under the control of Azerbaijan on November 10 based on a tripartite agreement between the Presidents of Russia and Azerbaijan and the Prime Ministers of Armenia.
The airport will develop the economics of the region. A railway will be built in the same zone, in Karabakh, particularly in Nakhchivan, which will further intensify the region's economic development. The construction of the railway from Horadiz to Zangilan, or the border with Armenia, will take about two years. According to him, the practical work for the project will start in the coming days. A feasibility study of the project is already being prepared.
