Construction of Batumi bypass road nears to end

The construction of a 13-km bypass road in Batumi has reached the final phase, the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia reports.

“Three of the five tunnels have already been laid. As for the bridges, out of 18 bridges, 11 have been completed, and work is underway on 7. We have every reason to say that this year will be the year to complete the project. There are geological challenges for soils, but solutions are under development in parallel. The 13-kilometer section of the Batumi bypass road will be a major achievement in the development of the East-West road corridor, which will also play a big role not only from the main and transit point of view but also in terms of unloading Batumi,” the Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure Georgia Irakli Karseladze said.

The project includes a two-lane asphalt road, 19 bridges, four traffic interchanges, five tunnels, and 57 culverts.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) are the project sponsors.

The contract value of the project is 329.6 million GEL.
