"Construction of a new railway and a road to Anaklia is not on our agenda at this point," Irakli Karseladze, the First Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and the Head of the Roads Department of Georgia, declared. In his words, the cause of this is the termination of the agreement with the Analklia Development Consortium.
"Construction of the road and the railway was the obligation the state had to fulfill according to the agreement. The road already exists without the port. Moreover, we carried out immensely important projects on these roads in 2018-2019, with the residents of Anaklia no longer hampered from moving freely there. This year, we plan to rehabilitate another section of the Zugdidi-Anaklia road. Consequently, the presence of a port is a must," Karseladze said and added that the project has already been designed, and they are putting the finishing touches to it.
