According to a report prepared by Transparency International, the pandemic has exacerbated corruption in the EU, the British edition of The Guardian writes.

The Transparency International survey was conducted in 27 EU member states between October and December 2020.

Corruption is reported to be particularly high in the healthcare sector.

According to the report, in the health sector, 6% of the population pays bribes to receive relevant services, and 29% of EU residents use personal connections to get relevant medical care.

Bribery in the healthcare sector is highest in Romania (22%) and Bulgaria (19%), while personal connections are most commonly used in the Czech Republic (54%) and Portugal (46%).
