The COVID-19 pandemic has caused severe migration replacements in Georgia.

For years, people departed for cities or abroad to work, but the epidemic made most of them return the regions.

As demographic experts say, people are going to villages to be safe from the virus and cultivate land plots. The process is temporary, but the government can encourage the people not to leave the regions due to the right policy, expert Avto Sulaberidze says.

He says regional infrastructural development is crucial, and it represents a problem nowadays.

"I expect to see continued migration from abroad as well,'' he adds.

"Because of the fear of the epidemic, people returned to the villages, and many families remain there. I expect that migration will continue from abroad, as living in the countries where our immigrants' work is dangerous because of the coronavirus. We must make sure that people move to the villages. At least that part of the population that left the regions at one time due to difficulties. It is essential that the infrastructure in the areas develops so that people have the motivation to live there," Avto Sulaberidze stated.
