The Georgian government believes that it has won the fight against stink bugs.

As an agronomist, leading specialist of the Georgian Association of Agricultural Experts, Nino Chioreli says the stink bug problems were not acute in 2019, and farmers needed more efforts to combat diseases and pests of hazelnuts and fruits.

Chioreli says the biggest problem that hinders productivity is the low awareness of farmers.

"In 2019, the main problem was rotten hazelnut kernels, caused by fungal and bacterial diseases treated by specific pesticides," she said.

In her words, it is essential that the spraying is carried out following safety rules.

"It is especially crucial as the violation of the rules threatens both the crop and human health," Nino Chioreli stated.

She says that farmers often do not comply with established treatment standards and harm the crop.

She concludes that low awareness is a severe problem in the agricultural field.
