The construction of highways will continue in the direction of Kakheti. The construction of a 15-kilometer section of the Gurjaani bypass road will be completed, and the construction of a new expressway, the 35-kilometer Tbilisi-Sagarejo highway, will start in 2021. Maia Tskitishvili, the candidate for the Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure, stated about it at the Parliament's committee hearing.

"By 2024, 95% of the roads of international importance in the country and 85% of the roads of domestic importance will be fully regulated, which will completely change the dynamics in our country. New highways and renewed inland roads will bring us closer to the EU and our trading partners, create more opportunities to attract tourists to the regions, facilitate production and other economic activities and bring more employment, more benefits to every family living there," said Maia Tskitishvili.

The tender for the construction of the Tbilisi-Sagarejo highway will be announced next year. This road is of international-transit importance because, in addition to the function of the main highway Tbilisi-Kakheti, it serves as a transit corridor between the north-western region of Georgia-Azerbaijan.

The project envisages not the restoration of the old road but building an entirely new highway. According to the project, the Tbilisi-Sagarejo road will have four lanes.
