The European Central Bank plans to create a new design for euro banknotes, Politico news agency writes.

According to the publication, the new euro banknotes may feature prominent people.

The redesign process will begin after opinions on the issue are gathered across the eurozone. A consulting group has been set up specifically for this purpose, bringing together experts of different nationalities. However, the board will make the final decision, and the process will be completed by 2024.

A similar idea was proposed in the 1990s, but a problem arose: each state wanted its representatives, landmarks, or works of art to be depicted on the banknotes.

There are currently two series of euro banknotes. The first includes banknotes of seven denominations - 5 euros, 10 euros, 20 euros, 50 euros, 100 euros, 200 euros, and 500 euros. The buildings depicted on them are samples of typical European architectural style.
