'Farmer of the Future' criticises agriculture support plan

As Head of the 'Farmer of the Future' Rusudan Gigashvili says, the anti-crisis plan of the Georgian government mainly aims at small farmers and provides the impression of social assistance, but it does not encourage the agricultural sector.

Gigashvili says benefits to farmers in the amount of 200 lari per hectare of land would be problematic.

She says the benefits can be used for other purposes and can even be resold, like it happened earlier.

"Cannot all this lead to larger fragmentation of already shattered agriculture? The instance is in the past, when families began to separate to get more vouchers: a parent was registered separately, the child - separately. There were also precedents of reselling the vouchers,'' she says.

As Rusudan Gigashvili says, the agro-business fails to develop as it cannot expand, and the new government plan does not leave any room for expansion.

As she states, the government anti-crisis plan is a program supporting agricultural business.

Unlike 'Farmer of the Future' the Georgian Farmers' Association declared it was satisfied with the government plan to stimulate agriculture.

The direct financial aid for farmers teeters between 850 and 1,700 GEL.

The government plans to spend ten million GEL on the agriculture modernization.

Farmers will receive 200-GEL per each registered hectare of land.

As part of the post-crisis plan, the government will provide 200,000 farmers with 300-million-GEL support.

All farmers are exempt from irrigation fees.

The tax allowance budget for farmers includes 13 million GEL.
