"Georgia regained the third place on the hazelnut market and is next to Azerbaijan," Merab Chitanava, the Chairperson of the Georgian Hazelnut Growers Association, said.

According to him, the association continues to work on increasing the yield of hazelnuts.

"Further plans are to export 100 thousand tons of hazelnuts from Georgia by 2023-24, which will bring us closer to the second place," Chitanava noted.

Currently, Italy is the second-largest exporter of hazelnuts, which has produced 130 thousand tons of high-quality hazelnuts this year.

Export of local products, exports without re-exports increased by 2.8% in 9 months this year. The sale of hazelnuts increased the most in the first nine months of 2020. This year, Georgia earned $ 37.6 million by exporting 7 007 tons of hazelnuts. Despite the pandemic, Georgian hazelnut exports increased by 60.3%.

The increase in demand for Georgian hazelnuts in the Hazelnut Association is linked to product quality improvement.
