In January-April 2021, Georgia imported 259,7 tons of tea, worth $1,594.6 thousand, from Azerbaijan. Statistical data show that the amounts of imported tea from Azerbaijan to Georgia have increased by 7.7 tons, or 3% if compared to the last year's figures.
As for tea exports, Georgia exported 111,4 tons of tea, worth $759.6 thousand, to Azerbaijan. According to the statistical data, exported amounts of tea from Georgia to Azerbaijan have shown a slight (0.1 tone) increase.
It is noteworthy that the two countries' governments have taken decisive steps for the betterment of the tea industry. In 2018, Azerbaijan implemented the development program envisaging that tea plantations would have covered 3,000 ha and the annual production of tea would have risen to 8,500 tons by 2027, an octuple increase if compared to that of 2018.
Georgia also implemented the program in 2016, providing for the rehabilitation of tea plantations stretched over 7,000 ha of land.
It should also be noted that studies have shown unique characteristics of the Georgian and Azerbaijani tea.
