Kvevri granted the status of a protected geographical indication

Kvevri is the first non-food product to be added to the State Register of Appellations of Origin and Geographical Indications. The certificate of protected geographical indication of Kvevri was handed over to the Minister of Environment Protection and Agriculture, Levan Davitashvili, by the Chairperson of the Georgian National Intellectual Property Center "Sakpatenti," Mindia Davitadze.

"Georgian Kvevri wine is becoming more and more popular in Georgia and on the international arena, increasing the attention even more. The Ministry has worked and created a standard Kvevri, which takes into account the historical memory and heritage that we have," said Levan Davitashvili.

In 2013, the traditional Georgian method of putting wine in Kvevri was awarded the status of a UNESCO (UNESCO) Intangible Cultural Heritage Site. It indicates the uniqueness of this method and sends a message to the entire world that wine is an integral part of ancient Georgian culture.
