Nika Shengelia: Loss of Georgia's transit function is unlikely

A nine-point plan for a ceasefire in Nagorno-Karabakh has been signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

As a result of these agreements, Azerbaijan and Armenia were given the opportunity to make some independent decisions.

According to experts, Azerbaijan is given a corridor to Nakhchivan. This disrupts the 30-year-old unshakable situation in the region and creates new realities, which means that Russia's monopoly influence is limited, and Turkey becomes a geopolitical player in the region.

Economic expert Nika Shengelia does not expect any infrastructural arrangement in the region in the near future. According to him, it is unlikely that Georgia will lose the function of a transit country.

"The fact that this solution or agreement will lead to any infrastructural arrangement shortly and Georgia will lose the function of a transit country has not been noticed at this stage yet. Even if such an issue is on the agenda, it will take years. The fact that Turkey, along with Russia, will participate in the peace talks gives us hope that there will be peace in the region. We must assume that the inflow of investment will be restored in small quantities. I do not rule out that the South Caucasus region will become attractive and interesting for investment. Georgia is also part of this region," Nikoloz Shengelia said.
