On the Georgian section of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway (BTK), the construction of 32,243 meters of snow fences is planned. The construction is made of metal stands with a height of 5 and 6 meters. The space between the stands is filled with pre-tensioned reinforced concrete frost-resistant and waterproof boards.

The management of the Georgian side of BTK reports about the construction works.

According to them, the main difficulty in this section during the winter is snowdrift. That is why it became necessary to arrange additional snow-protective fences.

"The Georgian section of the new Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway line will pass through the alpine zone, the highest point of the railway is located on the Taparavani-Fokani section - 2 183 meters above sea level, which plays a role of great importance in the implementation of the project," representatives of the Georgian side of BTK stated.

The new section of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway was built and rehabilitated on two types of overpasses: reinforced concrete and corrugated metal. The Georgian section of this railway includes a total of 36 overpasses. Eight overpasses underwent rehabilitation-reconstruction, and 18 new overpasses were built.

Five new bridges were built on the Georgian section of the railway line, and 17 got rehabilitated.

Improvement of Akhalkalaki International Railway Station is underway. Special equipment was installed at the station to turn freight wagons from the 1 520 mm rail standard to the European standard 1 435 mm. The freight station is located at 11 340 square meters.

The area of Akhalkalaki International Railway Station covers 102 hectares, where, among other facilities, there are buildings for staff.

On the Georgian section of the railway line, the works were actively carried out throughout the summer in the alpine zone.

Azerbaijan has increased cargo traffic on the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway.

Kars Logistics Center has already received the first train and will start commercial operation by the end of the year.

According to the 2019-2020 program of the Government of Georgia, the works for the full operation of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway line are underway.

During the pandemic, Turkey maintained cargo turnover with trade partners by using the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars transport corridor. The railway has become one of Turkey's main routes of foreign trade, although specialists in Georgia consider the Nakhchivan Railway, which Turkey announced after the Karabakh conflict ended, as a competitor to this railway. According to logistics and railway experts, Georgia has all the resources to maintain the role of one of the leading logistics and transit players in the region.
