The COVID-19 pandemic has created obstacles for Georgia's highland regions' gasification, SOCAR Executive Assistant Ibrahim Ahmadov told Azerbaijani media.

In his words, the parties of the negotiations on gasification are developers of local hotels in Georgia's mountainous regions.

He says the talks remain suspended and will resume if the potential gas consumers show interest.

Ahmadov says the interest vanished after some tourism industries stopped operation for the novel coronavirus pandemic.

In 2018, SOCAR firstly implemented the project in Georgia named 'Virtual Gas Pipeline.' The technology implies providing highland regions with gas, where it is almost impossible to install pipelines.

Following the project, the gas is carried via containers and not – by pipelines. The pilot project was conducted in Sairme resort, Georgia.

Akhmedov says no new pipeline construction is on the agenda this year, i.e., Georgia will not increase the gasification index.

Notably, SOCAR Georgia Gas supplied Georgia with about 812 mln cubic meters of natural gas in January – June 2020.

SOCAR is the main gas and oil and oil product provider of Georgia.
