Turnava: Mamatsashvili nothing to do with Azerbaijan's power imports

Georgian Economic Minister Natia Turnava says that Bidzina Ivanishvili's cousin Ucha Mamatsashvili has nothing to do with Azerbaijan's power imports to Georgia.

She made this statement in response to MP Levan Gogichaishvili, who said that Ucha Mamatsahvili-affiliated company is a mediator between Azerbaijan and Georgia for power imports.

Turnava says the statement, made by the MP, is not valid.

In her words, it is 'embarrassing' to see the people who came to politics and parliament by the high ranking of the Georgian Dream, tarnish the image of the Georgian Dream ruling party.

Turnava says that Georgia is far more independent in energy than it was in 2020, as Russia imported 90% of electricity to Georgia.

''Due to our energy reform, we can import electricity from any of our neighbors, as none is dominant. Neither our north neighbor dominates, and we can enjoy a choice. Imported power from Azerbaijan is an alternative of Russian imports, and the import cost is gradually decreasing,'' she added.

Notably, as MP Levan Gogichaishvili said, Ucha Mamatsashvili's company receives nine mln USD per annum as it mediates between Georgia's State Electric System and Azerbaijani Electric System.
