The UNESCO has held the first working meeting of the wheat protection group at the Georgian Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture.

Deputy Ministers Khatia Tsilosani and Iuri Nozadze attended the meeting.

The elaboration of all required documentation to ensure the local species of the Georgian wheat was the agenda of the meeting.

As the meeting participants noted, Georgia is one of the critical areas of wheat production in the Middle East. Therefore, the protection, restoration, and increase of the awareness on the Georgian wheat are of particular importance.

It is noteworthy that Georgia petitioned for Georgian wheat to be put on the UNESCO Safeguarding – Intangible Heritage List in March 2019. The Georgian wheat is divided into 14 species. Five of them are local:

1. Zhanduri

2. Zhukovsky Wheat

3. Makha

4. Georgian Asli

5. Dika

Georgia has more than 150 varieties of wheat. It occupies the first place according to the majority of the local species and forms of the grain.
