Why does Georgia prefer the Azerbaijani electricity?

"Electricity imported from Azerbaijan is better in terms of the price than the one from Russia, and ESCO also cooperates with a company importing from Azerbaijan," analyst Andria Gvidiani explains. An economics expert says that in an open economy, the price of any product or service is usually regulated and set by the market, and the country has to import electricity from the country from which it will cost cheaper.

According to Gvidiani, currently and in the future, importing electricity from Azerbaijan will be cheaper than importing from Russia. Azerbaijani and Turkish imports are a good opportunity to diversify electricity sources for Georgia.

According to Gvidiani, the price of imported electricity generally consists of the weighting of the day, night, and weekend tariffs. For example, in January 2021, the cost of Russian electricity (importer "Inter RAO Georgia") per kilowatt can be expressed as - 4.1 / 4.1 / 7.8 - that is, at night and on weekends 4.1 cents, and during the day (for 14 hours) - 7.8 cents. The prices of the importer from Azerbaijan (importer "El Green") were 3.9 / 3.9 / 5.4 cents, 3.9 cents at night and on weekends, and 5.4 cents during the day (for 14 hours).

Gvidiani talks about the need for full transparency in buying and selling electricity and adds that the Georgian market does not have its energy generation, and the country has to import an average of 12-15% of the required energy.
