Why has demand for wine decreased?

"After tourism, the wine sector is the most harmed economic sector in the world as a result of COVID-19," Georgian Minister of Agriculture Levan Bodzashvili said.

In his words, the increasing trend of wine sales dropped by 10-15% in 2020, as the wine sector is closely linked with the HoReCa segment.

"It was the HoReCa segment including the largest share of the Georgian wine in all the new markets, and the wine sales dropped by 10 -15% nowadays, while the rate was expected to rise. Annually we see a 5-10% growth, and Georgia's raw materials base also increases, and the industry focuses on the growth. This year we see a drop instead of the increase like it happens in the economy,'' he said, adding the reason is simple: the wine sales are closely linked with the hotel business. Hotel, restaurant, and café (HoReCa) business include 30% of the sales, but the segment was closed for several months across the world.

''Georgia has resumed operation of the restaurants, but they are still not fully loaded,'' Levan Davitashvili says, adding that the country projects about 300,000 tonnes of the grape harvest.

Minister Davitashvili states that the government offers a whole set of allowances and support for the wine sector stimulation.

The government of Georgia will spend 60 mln GEL on grape price subsidization.
