The expansion and development of the TANAP project give a prospect to the Caspian countries.

The project enlargement will pose a prospect for the entire Caspian Sea coastal countries, including Iran and its gas, as it shares a border with Azerbaijan, Nika Shengelia, Economic Expert, and vice president of International Research Association says.

As Shengelia states, once Iran experiences a lift of sanctions, its natural gas may reach Europe as part of the TANAP project.

As Expert Shengelia tells report.ge, Iran has already shown interest in this project, and it is natural, as it wants to export the gas to Europe.

''Georgia receives and will receive the transit value with the natural gas, and the service cost as well. The project expansion allows the Azerbaijani gas to be exported to the European market, but all the Caspian Sea countries, including the Iranian gas, as Iran and Azerbaijan share a border. We have five countries along the Caspian Sea coast- Azerbaijan, Iran, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, and Russia. Thus, Iran is allowed to export its gas to Europe. It should be good for all TANAP parties, as the more the pipeline is loaded, the higher profit it will provide,'' Shengelia says, adding the full operation and loading of the project is planned by 2026, and the entire volume of the gas passing the TANAP pipeline will reach about 31 bln cubic meters.

Providing all this explanation above, Shengelie believes that the novel coronavirus pandemic cannot prevent the project conduction.

In 2015, a strategic gas pipeline project of three countries was laid the foundation at the Trans-Anatolian gas pipeline presentation in Kars. Georgia became one of the key actors. The project aims to provide Europe with natural gas via Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Turkey. The project cost is about 11 bln USD.

ANAP Consortium Director General Saltuk Düzyol said that no obstacles had been observed since the launch of commercial operations.

''We can increase the volume following the demand in the nearest months,'' he said, adding ''the supplied volume and tariffs for gas transportation were defined in the 15-year transit agreement. Thus, the current world economic crisis will not stop us.''

The TANAP pipeline includes gas transportation from Shah Deniz mine via Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Turkey. At the Turkish-Greek border, TANAP connects the Trans-Adriatic (TAP) pipeline that crosses Greece, Albania, and Italy.

Georgia will receive more natural gas by 2023 after the TANAP starts operation. The volume of natural gas received for free will be four times more, reaching 1.15 billion cubic meters.

Currently, Georgia receives 300 million cubic meters of free gas, for being a transit country. The volume will reach 1.5 million cubic meters by 2026.
