The Prosecutor General's Office says the offer made to Nika Melia, the leader of the United National Movement, to apply to the court to change his detention in case of bail is still valid; Prosecutor Guluashvili informed journalists.
According to him, the detention of Nikanor Melia was never the goal for the prosecutor's office.
"As you know, we made an offer to the defense on February 25. We offered them a legitimate, lawful means to change the detention imposed on Nikanor Melia with bail if the defense wished so. In a public statement, the prosecution offered the defense a specific legal way to replace the measure of restraint with a more lenient measure. However, the defense is deliberately misleading the public, claiming there is no such legal mechanism. Even first-year students of any law faculty know that the prosecution has the right to request a change of imprisonment on bail," Amiran Guluashvili said.
Nika Melia's trial is underway at the moment. It will be known today whether the judge will change the restraining order against Nika Melia. The accused himself has no right to attend the trial.
Judge Nino Chakhnashvili is considering the case. According to her decision, on February 17, 2021, the motion of the prosecutor's office was satisfied, and Melia was sentenced to imprisonment as a measure of restraint for refusing to pay bail.
