Georgian Bar Association head: We expect a timely and clear explanation

Head of the Georgian Bar Association Davit Asatiani urges the Tbilisi City Court to provide them with an explanation concerning their refusal to allow ex-president Saakashvili's lawyers to attend the trial.

''Defendants are entitled to their lawyers' unlimited assistance. Considering this, we expect a timely and clear explanation of what made them prevent the lawyers from entering the courtroom,'' Alasania said in his social media post.

Mikheil Saakashvili's lawyer Nika Gvaramia appealed to Davit Asatiani and the Lawyers' Association to make a public statement concerning the incident.

The former president's lawyers left the courtroom today in protest after the judge refused to let Saakashvili's two other lawyers, Nika Gvaramia and Dimitri Sadzaglishvili, attend the trial.

Gvaramia said they had information on further case-related circumstances, and providing the lawyers present in the courtroom with the information was hard.

The Tbilisi City Court started the court proceedings an hour later than scheduled, with defendant Mikheil Saakashvili not attending his trial following the decision of the Special Penitentiary Service.

Prosecutor Jarji Tsiklauri submitted the motion before the judge to allow Saakashvili to attend the trial remotely, but the latter's lawyers refused, saying that the defendant was ready to appear before the court.

The lawyers also required that judges Nino Elieshvili, Maia Kokiashvili, and Lia Orkodashvili recuse themselves.

Mikheil Saakashvili is charged with tasking police forces to crackdown on protesters, breaking into Imedi TV company, and appropriating businessman Badri Patarkatsishvili's property.

Saakashvili faces 5-8 years in jail.

The ex-president, who was detained on Oct 1, has been on a hunger strike for 41 days now.
