Judge imposes GEL 70,000 bail on Nika Melia

Nika Melia, a UNM leader, has been imposed GEL 70,000 as a measure of restraint. The verdict was rendered by judge Dali Metreveli in Tbilisi City Court.

Following the court judgment, Nika Melia may not cross the country's border without notifying the prosecution of his intention.

The Office of the Prosecutor has filed a motion with the court on the reconsideration of the remand measure against Nika Melia after he removed the electronic bracelet from his wrist for all to see.

Earlier, the prosecution demanded that the court impose GEL 100,000 on him.

Nika Melia, however, says he does not intend to obey the court verdict. In his words, the electronic bracelet he was forced to wear is a symbol of injustice, which is why he threw it away.

The bracelet was fastened to Melia on July 3, and earlier, the court imposed GEL 30,000 bail on him.

On July 26, The parliament of Georgia approved the decision of stripping Melia of his parliamentary immunity.

Nika Melia was charged with organizing group violence and participating in it against protesters who staged the 20-21 June protest rally outside the parliament.
