Prison employees detained over Giorgi Rurua's assault receive prison sentence

The two employees in No 8 Gldani Penitentiary Institution detained over the assault on Giorgi Rurua and charged with workplace negligence have been sentenced to imprisonment.

The prosecutor demanded that they be sent to jail, while the defense wanted the judge to impose GEL 2,000 bail on each, but the judge declined the motion.

The detainees were arrested on 16 December. As per the court ruling of 16 December 2020, the prison employees were detained under Part 1 of Article 342 of the Criminal Code of Georgia, with this Article envisaging imposition of fines upon offenders or house arrest from six months to two years or up to three years of a jail sentence.

The detainees, reportedly, failed to properly perform their duties due to carelessness, with this resulting in physical abuse of convict Giorgi Rurua by a group of inmates on Nov 2.

Mr. Rurua was arrested on 18 November 2019. He was charged with the crime under Parts 3 and 4 of Article 236 of the Criminal Code, which envisages illegal purchase, possession, and carrying of firearms.

The Tbilisi City Court found Giorgi Rurua guilty on 30 July and sentenced him to four years in prison.
