The General Prosecutor's Office of Georgia applied to the Parliament regarding the restraint imposed on the Chairperson of National Movement, Nikanor Melia, to change the bail with detention. The General Prosecutor's Office informed report.ge.

"A case was launched against Nika Melia on June 20, 2019, for leading and participating in group violence near the Parliament building. According to the Tbilisi City Court decision of June 27, 2019, he was sentenced to bail as a measure of restraint. In addition, electronic monitoring was used against him.

The amount of bail applied to Nikanor Melia was fully deposited in the relevant account on July 15, 2019.

On November 1, 2020, Nikanor Melia, while making a public statement at a public gathering place, demonstratively removed his electronic monitoring bracelet, thus violating the terms of the measure of restraint," the statement mentions.

According to the Prosecutor's Office, on November 3, 2020, the prosecution filed a motion with the Tbilisi City Court requesting the measure of restraint imposed on Nikanor Melia to be tightened. In particular, the bail of GEL 100,000. On November 3, 2020, the prosecution's motion was granted partly, and the bail increased by GEL 40 000. The deadline for payment of the increased amount of bail was set at 50 days.

After the expiration of the bail period set by the court, the accused Nikanor Melia was given an additional term to secure the bail; however, the accused did not fulfill the obligation imposed by the court decision.

"Accordingly, the Prosecutor General of Georgia, following the requirements of the Constitution of Georgia and the Rules of Procedure of the Parliament, appealed to the Parliament of Georgia to grant consent to the court to change the measure of restraint applied to Nikanor Melia.

In case of obtaining this consent, the prosecution shall apply to the court to change the measure of restraint to imprisonment," the statement said.
