The new image is a combination of 21 separate photographs taken by the Mars rover Curiosity to explore a strange cloud over the crater of Gale, Livescience writes.

"I always marvel at the colors that show up: reds and greens and blues and purples," Mark Lemmon, an atmospheric scientist with the Space Science Institute in Colorado, stated.

According to NASA, it seems as if these clouds are higher in the Martian atmosphere than can be seen on the planet. If the cloud passes over Curiosity, it is filled with ice and floats about 60 miles above the surface of Mars.

NASA says the clouds are especially beautiful after sunset when the rays shine on ice crystals.
