Parliament is considering amendments to the Law on Public Health today, according to which the government's right to take restrictive measures without declaring a state of emergency will be extended until January 2021.

The Healthcare and Social Issues Committee will first discuss the issue, and the voting process will take place at the plenary session.

As explained by the ruling force, the bill's purpose is to maintain the existing legal mechanism after July 15, 2020, which will ensure the possibility of taking immediate and effective measures to combat the pandemic.

According to Dimitri Khundadze, chairperson of the Healthcare and Social Issues Committee, the draft law only changes its validity and does not include any article or principle changes. Consequently, if there are enough votes, it will be approved in one hearing.

The opposition does not support the changes and says the project is unconstitutional.
