Carl Hartzell, Ambassador of the European Union to Georgia, congratulates Georgia on the Day of National Unity. The ambassador wrote about it on his Twitter page.
"Congratulations to Georgia on April 9, celebrating its restoration of independence and commemorating those who tragically lost their lives standing up to Soviet troops on this day in 1989. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten," reads the statement.
Today, 31 years passed after the tragedy of April 9, 1989.
On the morning of April 9, 1989, Soviet troops dispersed a peaceful protest in front of the Parliament building in central Tbilisi, killing 21 people and poisoning thousands of civilians with unidentified gas.
Two years later, on April 9, 1991, the Supreme Council announced the restoration of Georgia's independence.
