Carl Hartzell: Mikheil Saakashvili's rights must be fully protected

According to the EU Ambassador to Georgia, Carl Hartzell, the EU is closely monitoring the developments around the third president of the country, Mikheil Saakashvili.

He said the protection of the rights of the ex-president and the fair conduct of the processes is a key issue. As Hartzel noted, the Georgian government is responsible for all this.

"We are closely monitoring the process surrounding the third president of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili, with such credible, local partners as the Public Defender, for example.

The European Union has said that protecting Saakashvili's rights and carrying out legal proceedings is key and is the full responsibility of the government. These rights include the right to a transparent, fair trial and appropriate medical care, as well as the protection of his or her honor and dignity during his or her stay in a penitentiary institution. The Georgian government must do everything possible to ensure that rights are fully protected," said Carl Hartzell.
